January 10, 2004 Capital Mineral Club Minutes

 The meeting opened at 1:35 p.m. at the Salvation Army building. Gordon Jackson, CMC President presided.  There were 32 members and 4 guests present.

The Treasurer’s report was read.  Motion made by Martin Kippley to accept and Natalie Undercofler 2nd.  Motion passed.  The Secretary’s December report was accepted as written in the newsletter with the correction,  “and all the little helpers” to “and all the BIG helpers.”  The Secretary was absent.

Old Business:

1.  Martin Kippley made a motion to give Alvin Jones of Eden Mills, VT., $200 in support of the Mineral Community.  No discussion.  Motion passed.

2.  Bill Burroughs made a motion to give the Salvation Army a donation of $300 for use of the room.  Martin Kippley 2nd.  Motion passed.

3.  Gordon Jackson discussed purchasing a new cabinet for storage that would house the projector screen which would cost approximately $200-$300.  There was discussion to have a combo lock with key.  Frances Gill made a motion to buy a new cabinet of up to $300  Bill Burroughs 2nd.   Motion passed.

New Business:

1.  Don Dallaire went through the budget for 2004.  John Herndon made motion to accept.  It was  2nd .  Motion passed.

2.  Bill Brown mentioned at 7-7:30 sometime this week on Channel 6 there will be a presentation on Maine tourmaline.  In the Jan. 2004 issue of Rock& Gem, there’s also an article on the Newry Mineral Park in Maine and in the Feb. 2004 issue, an article on the Gilsum Rock Swap.

3.  Bob Whitmore commented that the State Geologist is looking for donations for a case and specimens from New Hampshire for the Geology office and the lobby of Environmental Services building.  The Club has a display in the Information Center at the State Capital on loan since 1988.  Don Dallaire discussed a display case from Capital Mineral Club.  Gordon suggested that in March the Board will have a meeting and make a proposal to the Club resulting from the meeting.  The State geologist would be at the meeting and make his request.  The April meeting could be on the Old Man of the Mountain, given by the State geologist.

4.  Pat Barker brought in a display of rocks from New Zealand similar to those shown in pictures from the Mars robot.

 Door Prize Winners:

Bob Wilkin, Mike Undercofler, Dave Sheldon, Pat Barker, and Steffen Hermanns.

Presentation:

Jim Ross, who was to speak on microscopes had come down with the flu, causing a switch in the program.  We attempted to show micros through the scope and project them on the screen through an LCD projector.  The images were not the best and time was not available to make the necessary adjustments.  Bob Whitmore presented some slides on Palermo minerals and talked about the different pegmatite zones, low and high temperature quartz, and the core margins.

Refreshments were supplied by Charles Forsberg and enjoyed by all.
