The December 13th, 2003 meeting of the Capital Mineral Club was our annual Christmas party. We had a strong showing of forty six members and one guest, Rosanne Comeau, who filled out a membership application at the party. This makes two years in a row with attendance in the mid forties with a quick check showing 25-30 members attending the previous five years. Those who attended enjoyed a delicious buffet style meal. The ninth annual Best Field Collecting and Best Lapidary Contests were held. Quartz and the Orford Nickel Mine, Quebec, seemed to be this year's themes. Garnets from the Quebec mine seldom exceed an eighth of an inch, but John McCrory's specimen had many at least a quarter of an inch and Don Dallaire's piece had one garnet easily a half inch big. John drove very slowly avoiding as many bumps as possible bringing his delicate web of Diopside crystals peppered with gemmy red Garnets and it was well worth it, since he became our first two time winner of our Best Field Collecting club plaque. Even Bill Brown had some competition with Joanne Santospago bringing in a faceted "want to be gem" beryl from the Beauregard Mine. I think I saw Bill's knees starting to shake a little with thoughts of having to repaint the wall which has displayed his plaque for the past eight years to cover up the shadow marks it has created.
