March Club Meeting Announcement

The March 13th, 2004 meeting of the CMC will be held at the home of Gordon and Pam Jackson.  The time will be 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM.  This will be a workshop, much the same as last year.  The Snow Date will be Sunday the 14th.

The workshop will involve mineral preparation, trimming, cleaning, displaying, etc.  Show and tell is always welcomed and appreciated, in fact encouraged.  Anyone is welcomed to bring lapidary equipment.  If this is your interest, give others a call to make sure this happens.  Otherwise, it will be on the mineral collecting side and the social aspects of the hobby, which is a must, so bring your stories and smiles.

Steffen Hermanns is going to set up his glass bead blasting cabinet and air scribe trimmer.  Anyone bringing equipment should probably come a little earlier so you can set up in a relaxed atmosphere.

Pam will supply refreshments – crackers, cheese, peanut / dried fruit mix and coffee throughout the day.  The diehard coffee drinker might want to bring his or her own special coffee cup.  There will also be decaf. coffee available.  Also, soda, water and coffee will be provided for lunch   The rest of lunch will be a  POT LUCK Please bring a Main dish, Salad, or Desert.  You can call to say what your bringing or take your chances but IF EVERYTHING GOES PERFECT, WE WILL ALL BRING DESERT!!! :)

If you have a thumbnail specimen in a perky that you are willing to part with, bring it and after lunch we will have a raffle.  If you have a mineral – collecting friend or someone who might be interested in the hobby bring them along  THE DAY IS TO HAVE FUN!!!!

Rochester Mineral Symposium

You may have heard of this event before and known that several members of the club attend religiously every year.  When the dates of the symposium fall on the same weekend of the club meeting – several members are conspicuous by their absence.  You might wonder what this event is all about and what the attraction is.

Webster’s Dictionary defines symposium as follows:

1. “In ancient Greece, a drinking together, usually following the banquet proper, with music, singing, and conversation; hence, a banquet, or social gathering at which there is free interchange of ideas.”

2. “A conference at which a particular subject is discussed and opinions gathered; also, a collection of opinions on a subject; esp., such a collection published by a periodical.”

Webster is pretty close to describing the event.  There is a banquet and drinking is optional but may lead to singing.  It certainly is a social gathering and there is much free flow of ideas with many controversial.  The particular subject that is discussed is MINERALS and only MINERALS.  The symposium does come out with an annual publication containing abstracts of the discussions as well as having representation of prominent mineral publications there as well (Mineralogical Record, Rocks and Minerals and Matrix).

The event has been held for many successive years at the Radisson Hotel on Jefferson Boulevard in Rochester, New York.  Registration begins on Thursday afternoon with talks beginning at 8:00PM in the evening.  The symposium attendees arrive all afternoon to get settled in and dealers set up in their rooms on a floor reserved only for dealers. Some attendees set up their displays and all are greeting friends they only see from time to time.
