Biography Russ Sims This year the Club voted to have the 2003 UNH Geology Field Camp Scholarship awarded in memory of Russell Sims. Russ joined the Capital Mineral Club around February 1961, the second meeting of the Club. Russ immediately became involved becoming a Director which he held for several terms, the last being in 1978. Russ worked for Concord (Penacook) Mica Shop for 19 years, when he retired as a manager. He gave a talk to the Club about the Mica shop in 1962. The shop produced wet ground mica imported from South America, Africa, & India. The bulk of their product was sold to Dupont Corporation and used mostly in paints. The shop closed in the 1970's when the business moved south and now I expect it has long been overseas. He was the first Dealer \ Chairman beginning with the Mineral Roundup (This was the first Festival. The name was changed the following year to avoid the rodeo connotation) held August 22 & 23, 1964 and continued as dealer chairman through 1973. Russ’s wife, Alice came to our show in 2001 with Vera Fogg, a life long friend and fellow Club member and presented the Club with the original plate used to produce the Roundup flyer. The plate is copper over lead on a wooden backing and will be at the meeting for your viewing. The enclosed flyer is a print from the plate. THANK YOU Alice. Russ served the Club in other ways including, judge (the Club emblem) speaker, mineral displays, and auditor. Russ joined the Club with Alice who assisted in many of his duties and she eagerly supplied refreshments on several occasions. The Sims have three children, Jane, Everett, and Bobby. It was Bobby who at a young age became interested in "rocks" and brought his parents into the hobby and they never looked back. Russ became skilled at faceting and opened a shop in Boscawen known as the Riverside Gem Shop from 1968 to 1979. The Sims lived in Penacook most of their married lives, Russ was from New Jersey and Alice a Penacook native. Russ took his collecting to another level when he passed away in July 1988. Alice and her family are greatly appreciative of the award of this year’s scholarship in Russ’s name. |
