UNH Geology Field Camp Scholarship

A History

The scholarship started in 1988 at the suggestion of member Tom Lalish. The first scholarship of $500.00 was voted and approved by the Club and presented to Dr. Wallace Bothner of the UNH Geology Department. The scholarship was to be awarded to one deserving student to attend a geology summer camp. The first three scholarships awarded were $500.00 each (1988-1990). In 1991 the scholarship was raised to $1,000.00 to hopefully help two deserving students attend camp.

Starting with the 1993 scholarship, the award was to be in the memory of a past Club member.

November Discussion Items

We will be voting on a family membership application from Tom Weatherby from Hampstead.  Tom states he is just getting back into mineral collecting.  I am sure many of us can relate to that statement.

I will be passing around the pot-luck supper sign up sheet.  Eighteen have signed up at this point.  We need someone to do the mash potato and also, since I won’t be making the meeting the deserts can be cut down, just kidding.  Scott Higgins has agreed to run the meeting.  Everything should be about the same as last year, unless the Salvation Army is using the gym for their Christmas drive in which case you will all have to improvise around the regular meeting space.  Hopefully, by the time of the Christmas party they will have moved out of the gym.

We will have a report regarding the Unity pegmatite.  The issue of preservation should be considered.  Charles Forsberg has agreed to research the property further and should have a report for this meeting. Scott Higgins is gathering information on how a Maine club works their lease on the Weeks Mine in Wakefield.  Regardless of the outcome of this proposal we should continue to refine the process and solve some of the questions regarding ownership i.e Mining rights vs. full ownership,  Club deed name,  rules for club activity etc. Anyway, we should and will be moving forward.  As of now the board does not have a formal proposal.

We should be considering field trips for next year.  We have traditionally given Elvin Jones (Eden Mills) a $200.00 thank you and will ask for your vote again this year. We can also arrange by bus or carpool trips to shows, museums or other places of Club interest.  The Club use to go for 3 or 4 days to Herkimer, NY.  Everything was on your own except the collecting fee. There are several places you could do this. Field trips are a long topic and will be taken up by the board, but now is the time to start thinking about field trips and making suggestions during coffee.  The other consideration is NEFTA.  We need a coordinator and 3 locations if we want to belong this year.  Jon Herndon has done this for the last few years and deserves a BIG THANK YOU from the Club.
