Did You Know

  • NH has over 260 mineral species.

  • Over 250 million years ago NH was part of Africa.

  • NH rocks date back to the late Precambrian, about 650 million years ago.

  • The last major geological event in NH was the surficial deposit caused by the Wisconsin-age ice sheet about 11,000 years ago.

  • Foggite and Whitmoreite are two NH minerals  named after Capital Mineral Club members, Forrest Fogg and Bob Whitmore.

  • The State gem is Smoky Quartz, the mineral is Beryl and of course the State rock is Granite.

  • The first all color issue of "Rocks and Minerals" was the NH issue, July/August 1990

  • NH Mines and Mineral Localities by Philip Morrill, 2nd edition, 1960, lists over 750 mineral localities.

  • 14 carat gold is 50% pure. 24 carat gold is 100% gold

  • There are about 4600 mineral species (2000).
